Communication

Read the line under the larger numbers and explain to us exactly what that means?!

Okay, so here we are half way across the world in a society that tells us "Not all the dreams are attractive". Yes, we have met several nice English speaking families and yes, our guide speaks wonderful English, but...they are not our family and friends. Here's the scoop, you guys don't comment we don't blog. We don't care if you tell us what you had for breakfast but reading your comments each day really truly helps us feel connected to back home. (seriously, we'll keep blogging because there is a cool feature where I can turn this into a book when we get back home but you get the idea!)

Next quick order of business is something I should have added a few days ago, but congratulations are in order. Ryan's DARE essay was chosen as the winner for his class to be read at his DARE graduation. We are so incredibly proud of you Ryan!!!

Next on our list is Liam. He continues to astound us. So many stories we have read are about the kids slowly revealing their personality. If Liam has any more personality I don't know what we'll do with it. He is so endearing and funny and yes, Melissa, mischevious taboot. We love, absolutely love, that he won't yet smile for anyone else but us and for our guide. He really seems to have a good sense that we are mom and dad. We are slowly weaning away from baba to daddy as it is getting too confusing with the poo poo and with the fact that we tend to call his bottle a baba. Poor kid. He does, however, seem to be interested in people that are speaking to him, and trust me, that is everyone. Should we warn you now that he is even cuter in person than he is in his pictures? Not kidding.

We went to the hotel pool yesterday p.m. and he liked putting his feet in. Our memory card filled up so we didn't get pics of his big ear to ear grin. He has the sniffles so we opted not to go in the water. He was very content. For dinner we went to the restaurant on the second floor of the hotel. We tried a steamed egg and that seems to be the first thing he wasn't wild about. I was a little relieved as I have no clue how to make it. I will warn Mimi now that she will need to run to the grocery for us and pick up some rice along with a few other things. Otherwise, he has eaten everything we have given him. He also tried some thinly sliced beef as well as steamed carrots and zucchini and liked it a bunch.

We were given his schedule from his foster mom and it is clear that she really worked her own schedule around his needs. We have stuck with it exactly and he is so easy. We lie down with him for nap and bed and he promptly falls asleep with no fussing. I have been singing him the same lullaby each time and this afternoon for his nap we were lying face to face. When I got done singing he reached over and put his hands on my lips. Steve said he thought he was asking me to sing again. Speaking of 'asking' we got his first real words last night. Only problem is they were in Chinese so we couldn't begin to tell you what he said. Translation anyone? I was so stunned that I didn't think to write down a phonetic pronounciation.

Today we went to the Yeulu Academy and the Silk Factory. Vicky told us interesting detail after detail at the academy related to the countries history dating back 5000 years. Remember her job is as our adoption guide not as history tour guide. We asked how she was so well versed and able to answer so many questions. Get this Lauren and Jenna. She said the school children begin learning their countries history in first grade through high school...and...she actually learned 5000 years worth of history. Now you two need to stop complaining about learning 200 years of history!

Liam was amazingly patient through all of this day. It only took a few hours in the morning and we were back by lunch. We have nicknamed him inspector gadget as at mealtime he has these arms that telescope out to reach on the table. This morning Steve got up to get something so he made sure to move his plate, etc out of reach. Within a second, inspector gadget had his arm pulling on the placemat. He has discovered gravity and loves to tease while sitting in the high chair. He will hold his cup or piece of food or anything off to the side with his big grin and wait for us to say uh oh and down it goes. If there is food left on the table his arms turn into windshield wipers and off it goes. Max and Toby are going to love him!

Didn't think we'd be so ready to be home so soon but we are counting down the days (that is if we are able to remember what day it is). Not kidding about the comment thing. We miss all of you.
Love,
Paige, Steve and Liam

  4. Dearest Paige and Steve,
What wonderful news about Ryan !!!! We are so proud of him. I am sure he will get an extra treat from PopPop.
The girls come today with your cushions and then we are off to Raleigh and can hardly wait. It is hard to believe that Oskar will he handing his things down to him. You lucked out.
Liam can have anything he wants. I assune from your discription of his eating that we don't have to wash the kitchen. I am sure the dogs will prefer this food over their green beans.
Enjoy each day as this is a once in a lifetime
opportunity. Think how far you have come since you had this vision. Liam will teasure all these pictures in years to come
    We love all of you.

  6. It looks like Liam is getting pretty comfortable with his new favorite people! How great is it that you are getting such priceless moments with him right away! Can you imagine how excited he will be to see 3 more smiling (and probably crying) faces when he meets Jenna, Lauren, and Ryan!

I went into work yesterday to do some "repeat faxing" and we were all commenting on your amazing ability to "tell the story" and makes us all feel as though we are right there with you as we read it. It is very safe to say that there have been many tears shed as this blog as been developed and reviewed.

Keep singing to him mama, he obviously loved it!!

Thoughts and prayers for you all!

  7. I am a friend of Amy's, she tells me you are homesick so I'll be sure to check in every day from here on out and post comments!

I'm eating peanutbutter filled pretzels from Costco for breakfast and I just finished a vanilla yogurt too! And I always have a big thermos of coffee too, not anything spanky, just plain (ok plain flavored) coffee, but no fru fru like whipped cream or chocolate sprinkles or anything like that.

Liam is ADORABLE!!!!!! If he's cuter in person then you are gonna have girls knocking down your door like the minute you get home with him!

I do have a good recipe for steamed egg if you'd like it, but if Liam isn't fond of it, you can pass because it's a bit of a pain to make (way harder than Tuna Helper and things like that).

RYAN!! Way to go on your DARE essay! Awesome news!

5,000 years of history? Not so much thank you! I'm doing good to remember yesterday!

Congratulations on Liam, enjoy every moment of this precious journey and treasure it!

    Blessings to you from Minnesota!

    Karen

  8. Paige, Stve & Liam, This is Sandy Matthews, friends of Mimi & PopPop in Cypress Landing. I jsut want you to know that since your mom& dad shared your blog site with me, I have looked forward to each new day that you have posted more of your story and the wonderful pictures
that accompany the story ! My daughter-in-law who lives in Charleston, SC is also reading it. She & our younger son, Joe, have 2 little girls, Aila, 4, and Tatum, 16 months...our only grandchildren ! I talked to your mom Tuesday evening, before they left for Raleigh today for the overnight at Lisa's...they are so excited to meet Liam and share in his homecoming ! Words just don't express how touched I have been to read your story and how God called you to bring this little boy into your family ! When I showed the pictures to my husband, he agreed immediately that the photos were pure evidence of God's greatness and goodness at work in all your lives ! What a precious gift God has placed in your care ! And, what a lucky little boy is Liam, to have been provided such wonderful Christian parents and family !

Keep up the blogs !!!!! PLEASE !!!

  9. I am here again today!!!! Please don't ever stop writing. I am on this adventure and I wouldn't know what to do??

I love reading about you guys everyday.

Your grass looks awesome...Jack was tooling around on the mower yesterday. It is also very quit on the homefront. Noone has called asking for bread, milk or eggs. They know they can call me for ANYTHING. This past weekend was very rainy. You didn't miss a thing! For the Gallaghers we loved it because EVERYTHING was cancelled. It's always GOD's way of telling us to catch up on laundry, paperwork and playing games with the boys.

Ryan and Tom have their big journey to Springfield, IL today to visit the Lincoln memorial. Tom has been there 2x in the last year but the school does such a great job in showing the kids everything on a 5th grade level. Tom was always bored about reading every little caption. That was my favorite part.

Great job to RYAN on being picked to read his DARE essay. Tom is really looking forward to his graduation. Joey still has his DARE card in his wallet and says it is still valid.

You are right about LIAM. I just can't get enough of him. Those pictures are absolutely adorable. Liam has such big smiles in all these pictures does he automotically smile as soon as you hold up the camera??? You had me laughing again about the poopoo, baba and dada. I can only imagine the difficulty in communicating but the power of love conquers all. Your unconditional love will get him through anything.

Gotta get back to work. Miss you guys!!

    Love Vicky

    Gotta get back to work.

Hey...guess what? Tom's here!!! I was just showing the picture and sharing your story with him and he too thinks you are amazing people! He wishes that he could meet you before he has to leave ( Tues. BOO!) I promise I will take more pictures so that you can tell me how different he looks again!
I am so excited to follow your amazing story every step of the way! I wish I could reach out and give you all hugs!!
    Love you!

  12. Steve, Paige, Liam and the rest of the gang,

What a privilege God allowed me to come into this story, notwithstanding it was at the very end of your long journey. I have loved reading your blogs, seeing the pictures and listening to the music, and like so many others, cried tears of joy at what a blessing each of you is to the other. Liam has the sweetest face, and those big brown eyes are a "gotcha." My two-year-old grandson also sucks his right thumb, and those pictures of Liam sleeping so securely are just such a picture of peace and serenity.

As you spoke about how Liam is already attaching himself to you, I thought of John 10:14 where Jesus says, "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me - just as the Father knows me and I know the Father - and I lay down my life for the sheep." A little further in John 10:27, He goes on to say, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." What a wonder God has chosen this little lamb for you to shepherd and draw to the Shepherd!

Psalm 16:11 says, "You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand."

Joy was the first word that came to my mind as I began reading your blogs. God has certainly set Liam on a path, unlike anything he would have known, had God not called your family to this place in time. What a glorious God we have.

    In His love,
    Judy

  13. Are those signs, by chance in the elevators or the Dolton? I seem to recall several equally humorous lines almost 5 years ago! Gotta love it!

Liam sure is coming out of his shell - if he even ever had a shell! I love all the stories. It so fun to watch the beginning of a beautiful relationship. And what the two of you have already with him is truly beautiful.

  14. Wow Paige!!! When I saw the pics of you reaching out to Liam for the first time I just broke down in tears. Why are you making me cry from all the way over there in China? He is a cutie pie and I can't wait to meet him. His pics are up at work and the patients have seen them too. Congrats to both of you. xoxo, Dana
